Spice It Up

Herbs and spices can quickly turn and ordinary meal into an extraordinary meal. Three of my absolute favorites are turmeric, caraway, and garlic. These can be used in an infinite array of dishes. Here’s a wonderful recipe featuring each one. Enjoy.

Steamed Cauliflower with Pumpkin Seeds and Turmeric

• 2 cups cauliflower, chopped
• 1 Tbsp. olive oil, butter, or ghee
• ½ cup pumpkin seeds
• 1 Tbsp. ground turmeric
• Black pepper to taste
• Salt to taste

1. Place the cauliflower in a steamer basket.
2. Boil water and steam the cauliflower until it’s are at your desired softness.
3. Add the other ingredients to the cauliflower in a mixing bowl and mix thoroughly.

Roasted Yams with Caraway Seeds

• 2 cups yams, chopped
• 2 Tbsp. olive oil
• 1 Tbsp. caraway seeds
• Black pepper to taste
• Salt to taste

1. Mix all ingredients together in a mixing bowl.
2. Roast the yams in a roasting pan in an oven pre-heated to 400 degrees for 40 minutes or until they are fork tender.

Garlic-and-Herb Grilled Flank Steak

• 1 flank steak
• 1 Tbsp. olive oil
• 5 cloves garlic, diced
• 1 Tbsp. rosemary leaves, diced
• 1 Tbsp. thyme leaves, diced
• 1 Tbsp. sage leaves, diced
• Black pepper to taste
• Salt to taste

1. Pre-heat a grill.
2. Rub the steak with the olive oil.
3. Rub the garlic, herbs, black pepper, and salt all over the steak.
4. Grill the steak over medium heat for three to five minutes on each side, to desired doneness.
